Thirty years and 13 jobs across seven different industries have taught me that in any jobs you will always have four choices to choose from when starting a job - fit in, blend in, standout, or get out. One, you may choose to fit in. You know that you are a round peg and the organization is a square hole. You decide that it is better for you to fit in and you become something that you know you are not even though it is uncomfortable. Two, you know that you do not fit but rather than change, you try to blend in to the organization by remaining as quiet as possible with head down. You don't want to be seen or heard - you just want to do your job and go home and you are comfortable being invisible. Your third choice is to stand out. You know that you are different and it is impossible for to be quiet and invisible. Your character stands out, your voice stands out, and even the way you dress stands out. You are different and you are comfortable being different as long as you are not attacked for being different. If you don't fit in, you can't blend in, and it's hard for you to stand out - then your last choice is to get out. Don't remain in a job that forces you to be someone that you are not - you'll be miserable in the long term.
